OFF - ROAD SUCCESS FOR PIRELLI ALL OVER EUROPE

09.06.2017

Pirelli has just concluded a successful weekend on two well-known European rallies as well as on one of the most celebrated rounds of the European Hill Climb championship. Pirelli also claimed the top three places in the latest round of the European Historic Rally Championship, in Spain.

Acropolis Rally: strength and resistance of Scorpion K makes the difference

Pirelli’s reigning European Rally Champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz won the famed Acropolis Rally in Greece by nearly three minutes, at an average speed that was more than three-quarters of a second per kilometre faster than his nearest rival.

Kajetanowicz used a combination of Pirelli’s Scorpion K and XR tyres to win the event and seven of the 12 stages. In particular, the resistance to punctures and contained wear of the latest Scorpion KHB medium tyre were a key to victory for the Ford Fiesta R5 driver.

Andreucci and Pirelli again, on Rally del Salento

Back home in Italy, Peugeot’s multiple Italian champion Paolo Andreucci won the 50th Salento Rally by 40 seconds to consolidate his lead of the Italian championship. Andreucci used the latest evolution of Pirelli’s P Zero RK family of tyres: with just one pattern designed to be effective in all types of conditions, as is the case with tyres for the road. The tyre he used most often was the RK7B: a medium compound that provided plenty of grip despite the warm conditions. The event also made history with a stage win from Peugeot-Pirelli driver Kalle Rovanpera, aged only 16.

Faggioli triumphs at the European Hill Climb Championship

Pirelli completed a hat trick of off-road success thanks to Simone Faggioli, who won the famous Ecce Homo hill climb in the Czech Republic. The reigning European champion from Italy made perfect use of his P Zero supersoft tyres to win race one, and then 2 switched the the Cinturato wet to win race two as well, which was delayed due to heavy rain.

Rallye de Asturias Historico: top three for Pirelli drivers

It was an all-Pirelli podium at the latest round of the European Historic Rally Championship in Spain, with the Lancia Delta of ‘Lucky’ leading home the Lancia Stratos of former F1 driver Erik Comas. Lucio da Zanche was third, in a Porsche 911. All used Pirelli’s range of tyres for historic rallying: which feature modern technology with classic looks.

Pirelli rally activity manager Terenzio Testoni: “A great weekend for Pirelli, using four different types of tyre across three corners of Europe to win a gravel rally, an asphalt rally, a historic rally and a famous hillclimb, with four different types of car. What these four events all had in common was extremely tough competition and a huge challenge for our drivers. Nonetheless, they were all able to extract the most from themselves and their machinery, helped by their tyres, which played a key role in all three of these victories.”

Kajetan Kajetanowicz: “It was one of the most difficult rallies of my life, so demanding for the car, the body and the tyres. It’s been a good fight, and it’s thanks to maximum concentration from everyone that we were able to win.”

Paolo Andreucci: “The RK7B worked extremely well: in terms of grip, I think we had more than most people and in terms of durability we still had some life in the tyres by the end of the stages, which is extremely important in the Italian championship as the allocation of tyres is limited. The fact that we won by 40 seconds tells a lot of the story: that’s a big margin for a closely-fought rally like Salento.”

Simone Faggioli: “The performance of the P Zero supersoft helped us to break the course record in the first race, which had stood since 2012. The second race was more complicated; we used the wet tyres but conditions were reasonably dry at the bottom, before getting much wetter at the top. I was really impressed by the adaptability of the product.”

Lucky’ Battistolli: “I was very happy with the performance of the tyre in both wet and dry conditions. The W7 wet tyre in particular is one you can use anywhere. In theory, Asturias shouldn’t suit our car against the lightweight sports cars like the Stratos and Porsche. But we still managed to triumph, thanks also to the performance of our tyres.”
